Your first assignment is to practice writing

the letters A, E, I, O, & U. You will submit 2

due next week. Download the image below

Terminology. As you learn the alphabet, many new words will be introduced. Such as your P.A. (pen angle). Are you holding it at a 45 degree angle? Rhomboid, x-height, serif and sans serif. The invention of the Gutenberg Press changed how the world read type: Calligraphy set it, and Gothic Revived it. Numbers. During your second and third week of class an introduction on numbers and punctuation will be given. Click on the image above to download an example of numbers.

How do letters sit on a line?

Understanding the anatomy of type is an important part of every font and its font family. Calligraphy isn't excluded.

Week 4. As you finish learning the lower case alphabet, we introduce 'tucks.' Certain letters tuck underneathe others. This will help decrease our spacing inbetween letters, and help give your writing that perfect, picket fence that we've been talking about.

Capital letters are introduced toward the very end of class. Don't worry--they aren't hard to achieve with a few rules and applied knowledge. Our goal is to get the lower-case alphabet polisehd as soon as possible, so we can create 2-3 projects during this course. It isn't any fun if you are stuck in a learning mode without the ability to create!

Project 1. Now it's time to have fun. You get to apply all of your knowledge about the Fraktur alphabet, and get creative. You get to pick the theme, and we're going to take a look at student work samples.

Be sure to take some time to explore the PROJECTS page to this website. It will help inspire you to see what other students have created after a few short weeks of practice.

Mixed-Media Card

(Calligraphy, India Ink, Acrylics)

You will discover that Calligraphy is very functional when it mixes with other medias. This is always a requirement when creating for this course.
